NAPOLEON IN EXILE – An album of letters, documents, prints and ephemera relative to the arrest and exile of Napoleon on St. Helena following his defeat following Waterloo. Most examples are tipped into the album, while others are housed loosely within.

Of particular note are several autographs of French officers who accompanied Napoleon into his final exile [including:] MONTHOLON, Charles Tristan, Count (1783-1853). A.L.S. to "Monsieur le Comte," 24 January 1828. 2 pages in French, 4to. * LES CASES, Emmanuel, Comte de (1766-1842). A.L.S. to "Docteur Baxter," [Cape of Good Hope] 19 January 1817. 3 pages in French, 4to. Writing following his recent expulsion from St. Helena, sending news of his arrival at the Cape of Good Hope and recounting his difficult voyage from St. Helena. * GOURGAUD, Gaspard (1783-1852). A.L.S. to Governor Hudson Lowe, Longwood, [St. Helena,] 10 May 1817. 1 page in French, 4to. * COCKBURN, George, 10th Baronet (1772-1853). A.L.S. to "My dear Sir John," [London,] 30 September 1819. 4 pages, 8vo. [Also With:] a series of autographs of prominent British statesman and officers either concerning Napoleon or those associated with his fate at St. Helena [including:] GEORGE III (1738-1820). D.S. as King, Carlton House, 11 January 1816. Appointing George R. Bingham as "a Brigadier General to the Forces serving on The Island of St. Helena, from the 21st of October 1815." Printed documents include two bills and two Acts of Parliament concerning Napoleon's captivity on St. Helena, including the landmark Act for the more effectually detaining in Custody Napoleon Buonaparté, 11 April 1816. The lot features additionally several prints depicting St. Helena, a portrait of Napoleon, "The Exile", as well as other views of the island, Napoleon's grave there, and other images.
