LISTER, Joseph (1827-1912)
A bound volume of twelve pamphlets, most being presentation copies. London: 1853-1878.
Comprising:
1. Observations on the Contractile Tissue of the Iris. [offprint] From the Quarterly Journal of Microscopic Science, No. 1 [New Series]. London: W. Clowes and Sons, [1853].
The first published paper by the founder of antiseptic surgery: presentation copy inscribed on upper wrapper ‘Professor Ellis, with the Author’s respects’. Lister corroborates R. A. Kölliker’s claim 'that the iris comprises involuntary muscle and demonstrate[s] that pupillary size is controlled by two distinct muscles' (DSB). Written in his last year of medical school, the paper attracted 'favorable attention at home and abroad' (op. cit.). Osler 1676 i; Norman 1359.11pp. Half-title, engraved plate, pencil annotation on p. 5 querying the name 'Kölliker' in the text and suggesting an alternative, ‘usual’ corrected in ink to ‘uveal’ on p. 7, one sentence corrected in pencil on p. 9. Original printed pale green upper wrapper.

2. Observations on the muscular tissue of the skin. [offprint] From the Quarterly Journal of Microscopic Science, No. 1 [New Series]. London: W. Clowes and Sons, [1853].
Presentation copy of Lister's second published paper, inscribed on upper wrapper ‘Professor Ellis, with the Author’s respects’. 7pp. Engraved plate. Original printed pale green upper wrapper. Not in Norman.
Lister confirmed Kölliker's observations ‘that in contrast with other mammals—in which the large tactile hairs (the vibrissae) are associated with striated muscle—in humans, smooth muscle fibres are responsible for the erectile function (horripilation) of hair. […] Such was the extraordinary skill of Lister's microscopy that he could gently correct Friedrich Gustav Henle, a researcher regarded as perhaps the greatest German histologist of the nineteenth century, for mistaking small blood vessels for muscle fibres. Both [Lister’s first and second] histological papers were illustrated with skilful drawings made with the camera lucida, which, Lister affirmed, ‘has the great advantage of ensuring correctness of proportions’ (Howard, E.R., Joseph Lister: his contributions to early experimental physiology, Notes and Records. Royal Society of London, 2013 May 29;67(3):191–198). Osler 1676 ii; not in Norman.

3. On relations of Micro-organisms to Disease. An address delivered before the Pathological Section of the British Medical Association at Cambridge, August 12th, 1880. Reprinted from the ‘Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science, for April, 1881. London: J. E. Adlard, 1881.
16pp. Not in Norman.

4. On Spontaneous Gangrene from Arteritis and the causes of Coagulation of the blood in Diseases of the Blood-Vessels. Reprinted from the Edinburgh Medical Journal for April 1858. Edinburgh: Murray and Gibb, 1858. Not in Norman.
16pp. (with vertical crease from folding).

5. Preliminary Account of an Inquiry into the Functions of the Visceral Nerves, with special reference to the so-called ‘Inhibitory System’ … in a Letter to Dr. Sharpey, Sec. R.S. Received August 12, 1858. Communicated by Dr Sharpey.’ [‘Extract from the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Vol. IX No. 32’ (contemporary manuscript note in ink at end)]. Together 12 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (212 x 130mm, some works slightly shorter). Manuscript ‘Index’ at front. 19th-century dark purple pebble grain cloth, flat spine titled in gilt (spine and portion of lower cover sunned, spine ends rubbed, corners slightly bumped). Provenance: ‘Professor Ellis’, to whom many of these works were presented by the author, is very likely George Viner Ellis FRS (1812-1900), Professor of Anatomy at University College London, who taught Lister. Lister’s own annotated copies of George Viner Ellis’s publications on anatomy are preserved in the library at King’s College London – John Howard Mummery CBE FRCS (1847-1926, dentist and microscopist; this volume presented in January 1927 by Mrs Howard Mummery to — Royal Society of Medicine (bookplate and ink library stamp [Royal Society of Medicine] on Index leaf, and ‘Royal Society of Medicine Jul 12 1927’ on the upper wrapper, half-title and first text leaf of the first work).
