Introductory Notes on Lying-in Institutions. Together with a proposal for organising an institution for training midwives and midwifery nurses. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1871.
Presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed by the author: ‘To the Obstetrical Society of London, this little book is respectfully offered by Florence Nightingale, London 1871’. ‘Nightingale showed by statistical evidence that many lying-in wards and institutions were pest-houses; she showed the importance of isolation and extreme cleanliness; and furnished model rules, plans and specifications for sanitary lying-in hospitals. […] She urged the importance of training-schools for midwives; described the ideal of an institution of the kind; and pleaded for "Midwifery as a Career for Educated Women". There was much agitation at the time for the admission of women to the medical profession. Miss Nightingale in a letter addressed "Dear Sisters," suggested that there was "a better thing for women to be than 'medical men,' and that is to be medical women"’ (Cook, E.T., The Life of Florence Nightingale, 2021). Not in Garrison-Morton or Norman.
Octavo (212 x 146mm). Half-title with authorial presentation inscription, 5 lithographic plans, one folding, a few illustrations in the text, integral publisher’s advertisement leaf of ‘Medical and Surgical Works’, additional 15-page publisher’s catalogue (plus one-page index) dated September 1871 at end (text block splitting, upper hinge starting). Publisher’s maroon blindstamped cloth, flat spine lettered in gilt, brown endpapers (spine torn and detached, extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Presented by the author to the Obstetrical Society of London (author’s inscription on half-title and ‘Obstetrical Society of London’ circular library ink stamp to title) – [Royal Society of Medicine].
