Medieval binding: half-bound in undecorated mid-brown leather over wood (beech?) boards, the front board split vertically and with three medieval(?) diagonal repairs, two clasps at the fore-edge with trefoil-shaped metal catch-plates on the lower board, the head of the spine with a 17th(?)-century paper label inscribed ‘P. Ovidi / Naso / Epistol. / MS’, the foot with a typescript label in capitals ‘Phillipps MS. / 16362’

Thomæ Phillipps, Bart., 1837, p.317, no 16362. Content:
Added heading, ‘Publii Ouidii Nasonis Epistolarum erodium liber primus. Penelope Ulisi’; Heroides, ending in Ep. 20 at line 184: ‘Hanc tua Penelope lento tibi mitit Ulixe [...] Fert aliis tristem sucus amarus opem’, ff.1–69; blank, ff.69v–70v. The blank spaces at the end show that the text was left incomplete by the scribe (possibly due to a defective exemplar), and is not imperfect.

The Heroides by Ovid (43 BC – AD 17), the Roman poet, consist of letters supposedly written by legendary heroines (including Dido, Ariadne, Medea, Hermione, and Penelope) to their lovers or husbands; they are therefore studies of love from female perspectives, whether betrayed, deserted, or worried for the safety of their lover.
