Der Meißner Jagdpokal von Johann Joachim Kaendler, in: Porzellan Parforce. Jagdliches Meißner Porzellan, ed. Ulrich Pietsch, Munich 2005, p. 36-41.The scene, depicted on this richly decorated goblet, is based on a true incident. On the 27th of October 1739, the Cologne Elector Clemens August of Bavaria was on a hunt near Hümmling in the Emsland region. The large stag, which the hunting party was pursuing, took refuge on the thatched roof of a sheep barn. There he was cornered by the pack of hounds and Clemens August was able to give him the finishing stroke. The architect Johann Conrad Schlaun, who was building the nearby Clemenswerth hunting lodge for Clemens August at the time, was so fascinated by this story that he captured it in the design for a hunting goblet. The Westphalian estates then commissioned the Meissen manufactory to make the goblet in porcelain as a gift to Clemens August. Together with Johann Gottlieb Ehder, Johann Joachim Kaendler made the model for the goblet in 1741 according to Schlaun's drawing. He adopted the basic shape of the vessel and the scene depicted on the lid. He freely designed the details and composition of the decoration in his typical expressive style .
