The Italian poet Torquato Tasso probably worked for over 15 years on his most famous work,
the epic "La Gerusalemme Liberata". It was completed in 1574 and depicts a battle between
Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade during the siege of Jerusalem. It
was a great success throughout Europe and over the next two centuries sections of it were
adapted for madrigals, operas and plays.
