Los 229 | Relation de ce qui s'est passé en La Nouvelle France, és années 1644 & 1645
Schätzwert
$ 12 000 – 18 000
Fine first edition of the rare 14th Relation, documenting the treaty negotiated at Trois Rivieres and related ceremonies and protocols of the Mohawk and Huron. The report on the Huron mission by Lalemant is integrated here without the usual separate title. Governor Montmagny negotiated a peace treaty between the Iroquois, the Mohawks, and the Christian Hurons after several years of struggle for the French fur trade in the region. Unmentioned in the Relation is that Montmagny, in order to court the Mohawks, included a secret clause in the treaty which denied protection to non-Christian Hurons. Montmagny made such an impression on the Iroquois that they used their name for him, Onontio, to refer to all subsequent governors of New France. Bell 27; Church 476; Harrisse 84; McCoy 59.
Octavo (170 x 100mm). Woodcut printer's device on title. Contemporary limp vellum, title in ink on spine.
