Second Latin edition of Ricci's important history of the Jesuit mission to China depicting the manners, laws and customs of China, originally published in 1615. Trigault translated the Italian manuscript original of Ricci's diary, and added other Ricci materials and a description of Ricci's death and burial. Quarto (205 x 145mm). Engraved title, folding woodcut and letterpress plate, with final blank (E3 and T2 with very small spots affecting as couple of letters, very short marginal tear and chip to 2U3, 3D3 creased due to a prodcution flaw, 30mm tear into folding plate but without loss, the plate itself with a small marginal hole, creased and frayed at fore-edge and with some uneven browning, the whole with some light variable browning and occasional spotting). Contemporary calf, covers ruled with single gilt fillet enclosing gilt wreath centrepiece (rebacked by Bernard Middleton, preserving original backstrip with central crack, and recornered). Provenance: publisher's presentation inscription in lower margin of title (perhaps to:) – ?Julius Ardre_lus. (contemporary inscription in another hand) – Biblioteca Giovannini (stamp in margin of 4K2v) – Franz Pollack-Parnau (bookplate).
