First edition of the author's most celebrated and influential work, in a jewelled binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe of London.

Octavo (162 x 94 mm), half-title, (annotation at foot of page 115 in blue ink ‘* and of Hell / J.H.’), later dark blue morocco elaborately gilt and jewelled by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, upper cover with a central panel depicting seven white opium poppies with tan morocco petals and green morocco leaves on a gold background with a border of mother-of-pearl (one small piece missing) interspersed with 20 semi-precious purple stones, and with a moonstone at each corner, an outer border decorated with green and red morocco onlays of leaves and flowers, the lower cover with a large central dragon in onlaid orange morocco gilt with a red jewelled eye surrounded on a richly gilt backround of green morocco richly tooled in gilt, with a border of flowers in orange and blue morocco inlays and gilt leaves, with a blue morocco text panel at the foot with gilt stamped text ‘As when some great painter dips … his pencil in the gloom of earthquake and eclipse’, spine in six compartments richly decorated with inlaid green and red morocco inlays gilt, raised bands gilt, blue morocco doublures gilt, brown crushed morocco endpapers, upper pastedown with inlaid red morocco monogram of the author [“T DE Q”] in blue morocco circle surrounded by rich gilt tooling, gilt edges (upper board detached, minor browning to endpapers).
