[SHARKEY, John (c. 1833-1898)]

Panorama of New South Wales. [Sydney: Government Printers, c. 1885].

Impressive panorama of Sydney taken from Government House, capturing iconic landmarks of the city including the Circular Quay, the Botanical Gardens and the harbour. In excellent and crisp condition, this expansive image documents Sydney’s architectural landscape in the twilight years of the Victorian era. The early influences of Federation style, visible in the peripheral suburban buildings, contrasts with the grandeur of the French Second Empire architectural style of the governmental offices, physically precursing the shift in empirical power within the state New South Wales. It is highly likely that this image was taken by John Sharkey (c.1833-1898), the first official photographer of the New South Wales government (1869-1896).

7 joined albumen photographs (122 x 1558mm) mounted on linen with green silk edging (288 x 1626 mm), far left photograph with ‘85A’ printed in negative (far left photograph slightly cockled, otherwise panorama in good condition, linin mount with faint finger-soiling); original dark navy morocco covered cylindrical case, lettered and ornately tooled in gilt (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Somerset Richard Lowry-Corry, 4th Earl Belmore (1835-1913, Governor of New South Wales 1868-1872, no physical evidence of provenance; thence by descent).
