Microsoft’s first hardware product, introduced in 1980.

The Z-80 SoftCard, introduced in 1980, was a groundbreaking add-on for the Apple II personal computer, enabling it to run software designed for the Zilog Z-80 microprocessor. Developed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and his team at Microsoft, the SoftCard was instrumental in expanding the Apple II’s capabilities, particularly by allowing it to execute applications originally written for CP/M, an early operating system used on many microcomputers of that era.

Paul Allen, having recognized the potential of the Z-80 processor and the need for a bridge between the Apple II and CP/M software, spearheaded the development of the SoftCard. This innovative product was significant because it allowed Apple II users access to a broader range of business applications and utilities, contributing to the computer's widespread adoption in the business community.

Introduced shortly after the Z-80 SoftCard, the Microsoft RAMCard was a complimentary product designed to enhance the memory capabilities of the Apple II, which originally came with a limited amount of RAM. The RAMCard allowed users to add additional memory to their Apple II systems, facilitating more complex and memory-intensive applications and improving overall system performance.

The SoftCard was a success, demonstrating Allen’s foresight in understanding the needs of both hardware and software markets. Its development not only enhanced the functionality of the Apple II but also solidified Microsoft's role as a key player in the software industry. This move was an early example of Microsoft's strategy to leverage software solutions across different platforms, a principle that would define much of the company's future growth and success.
