A handsome compilation of devotional texts, in a contemporary binding, from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps.

220 x 153mm. 161 leaves, collation: 18(i a pastedown), 2-78, 87(of 8, lacking viii, before f.63), 98, 109(of 8, viii inserted), 119(of 8, vii a contemporary inserted strip, here continuously foliated), 129(of 8, ix inserted), 13-208, modern foliation in pencil 1-161, 31 lines, written space: 150 x 97mm, occasional catchwords and quire signatures survive, large elaborate penwork initials in red and blue, smaller initials in red or blue, rubrics in red, capitals touched in red, contemporary and later annotations in the margins, contemporary red leather tabs (lacking one leaf of text before f.63, lower margin of f.156 shaved off with no loss of text, repairs to f.160, occasional stains and smudges). Contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, brass clasp, four brass bosses (spine repaired, lacking fastener). In fitted cloth sleeve and box.

Provenance:
(1) Benedictine Abbey of Marienmünster, in the diocese of Paderborn, founded in 1128 by Widekind and his wife Lutrude, according to the Phillipps and Rosenthal catalogues. A colophon on f.97v gives the date of 1472.

(2) Leander van Ess (1772-1847), his collection catalogue, Sammlung und Verzeichniss handschriftlicher bucher [...] welche besitzt Leander van Ess, Darmstadt, 1823, no 30.

(3) Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), antiquary and book collector: his MS 415, inscription in ink and Middle-Hill stamp on opening leaf. His catalogue, Catalogus librorum manuscriptorum in bibliotheca D. Thomae Phillipps, Bart., 1837, no 415. His sale, Sotheby's, Further portion of the classical, historical, topographical, genealogical and other manuscripts & autograph letters of the late Sir Thomas Phillipps, 6 June 1910, lot 116, to, according to Schoenberg Database:

(4) Maurice Léon Ettinghausen (1883-1974), antiquarian bookseller. According to Faye & Bond, Supplement, p.403, sold by 'Jacobi' to a 'German owner' in 1912, presumably:
