The Hound of the Baskervilles

Arthur Conan Doyle

DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Hound of the Baskervilles: Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1902.

The most famous Sherlock Holmes story: a remarkably fine presentation copy of the first edition in book form, inscribed by the author on the title page: ‘I perambulated Dartmoor before I wrote this book, A Conan Doyle’. There has been no inscribed copy at auction since the Manney copy in 1991, which bore the rather less interesting inscription, ‘Yours very ty Arthur Conan Doyle’ and had various condition issues. The present copy is in fine original condition and boasts an unusually interesting inscription for Doyle, who is typically far more formulaic even when presenting books to close associates. An ownership inscription dated 1902 on the front endpaper suggests that the recipient was L. B. Whitehead, a painter from Devon who specialised in local scenes.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is perhaps the most iconic detective novel ever written and, as the inscription suggests, was inspired by Doyle’s walks across Dartmoor in 1901. First serialised in the Strand Magazine, this is the first edition in book form, with the misprint ‘you’ for ‘your’ on page 13. This story was the first Holmes adventure since the publication of ‘The Final Problem’ in which the detective disappears over the Reichenbach Falls. This literary return was described by Doyle as the ‘inevitable relapse after repentance.’ De Waal 87; Green & Gibson A26; Locke 52. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.

Octavo. 16 illustrations by Sidney Paget (minor spotting to endpapers and fore-edge just into some margins). Original pictorial red cloth gilt with design by Alfred Garth Jones (spine only very slightly dulled, joints very faintly rubbed, short superficial splits to upper hinge); custom cloth box. Provenance: L. B. White (presentation inscription from the author on title page, ownership inscription on front endpaper dated April 1902).
