Los 105 | The McMahon-Hussein Correspondence
The McMahon-Hussein Correspondence
Correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon ... and the Sherif Hussein of Mecca July 1915-March 1916 [with a map]. [Cmd. 5957.] London: HMSO, 1939.
First publication of this famous correspondence. During WWI, Britain managed to commit to three mutually contradictory policies: a) the Sykes-Picot Treaty, whereby Britain renounced its claim to Syria in deference to France; b) the Balfour Declaration of support for a Jewish National Home in Palestine; and c) pledged support for Arab self-determination and self-government via the McMahon-Hussein correspondence. This lot comprises: the McMahon-Hussein correspondence itself; the report of the Maugham committee, set up during the London (or St. James's Palace) Conference of 1939, to determine the nature of this correspondence, giving the British and Arab positions on the promises of independence made to the Arabs during WWI, and of their relevance to Arab rights in Palestine; and thirdly, the rare pamphlet published by the Jewish Agency for Palestine providing evidence for their argument that no claims to Palestine were raised by Arab representatives on the basis of the McMahon correspondence. Khalidi & Khadduri 1533 and 1539 record the first two publications only.

Octavo (244 x 153mm). 18pp., folding colour-printed map. Stapled self-wrappers.
