TOLOMEO, Claudio (100-170) - Omnia quae extant opera, praeter Geographiam. Basel: Henrici Petri, 1551.

First complete edition of the Ptolemaic mathematical writings edited by the Basel astronomer Erasmus Oswald Schreckenfuchs (1511-1579) and altogether second complete edition of these writings. Among the works of Ptolemy collected here, the Almagest is particularly important having been the undisputed basic work of astronomy for about 1500 years. The work is completed by Johannes Honter's two splendid maps of the southern and northern constellation hemisphere, here in their original state after having been used for the first time in the 1541 edition of Ptolemy's Geography. These two woodcut maps are rewnown for both their geocentrism and their new style of constellation and they are the first major printed maps showing stars as seen from the earth.

Folio (315 x 200mm). Printer's device on title and colophon, 2 double-page plates, geometric figures in text (browning that irregularly affects some gatherings, some spotting, first leaves detached). Contemporary binding in blindstamped calf (lacking spine, plates with serious defects and losses, partially unbound). Provenance: "Riccardo del Prè, mastro del sacro palazzo" (ownership to first flyleaf).
