VEGETIUS RENATUS, Flavius (d. 450) [and 6 others]
[Sammelband of 7 Roman incunables]. Rome: 1481-1487.
Sammelband containing 7 incunabula printed at Rome, mostly relating to military history and matters of war. The first four works, issued by Eucharius Silber, were available to buyers collectively or separately, which may explain why they are not regularly found together (the copy listed in BMC contains only the first, second and fourth works; the third part is listed alone). Together they represent the first collected edition of these great classical texts on the art of war. Aelian's text is extensively illustrated with typographic diagrams schematizing the strategic arrangement of troops. The fifth work, a reprint of Guldinbeck's edition of c.1481, reconstructs a speech supposedly delivered by Julius Caesar at Vesontio (modern-day Besançon) during his Gallic campaign. This is followed by the second Rome edition of the works of Sallust, and by a spurious collection of letters purporting to be by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed II.
