CORONELLI, Vincenzo (1650-1718). Hos Globos Terracqueum, ac Coelestem dicat... Venice: [c.1697-]1700.

Extremely rare pair of 15cm (6-inch) globe gores. On the market, a pair was sold at Sotheby's, 1 December, 1983, lot 223, and another pair bound in Lord Wardington's Globi del P. Coronelli (Sotheby's, 18 October 2005, lot 118). Shirley BL T.CORO-14a.17 (these cross-referenced, but not illustrated, in Shirley World 587).

Two sets of 12 gores on 2 sheets (approx. 361 x 496mm; plate marks 240 x 470mm) for a pair of terrestial and celestial globes 15cm (6-inch) in diameter. Terrestrial: showing California as an island, Terra di Iesso ('Scop. nel 1643') between North America and Japan, large portions, accurately outlined, of Australia and New Zealand, the latter with point indicated 'Antipode della Città di Venetia Fabria dell'Autore', tracks shown of 'Viaggio di Giacomo Mayre 1616' and 'Viaggio da Siam à Brest fatto nel 1686'. Celestial: richly engraved with the constellations and showing the stars positioned for the epoch 1700.
