WADSWORTH, Edward (1889-1949)

Sailing-Ships and Barges of the Western Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. London: Frederick Etchells & Hugh MacDonald, 1926.

The artist’s working proof copy of a finely-illustrated maritime work, with his annotations and instructions in pencil throughout. 'It is a book of interest and beauty, the aim of which was primarily to serve as a fittingly exquisite record of a disappearing means of transport' (Rothenstein, Modern English Painters, p.156). ‘In Edward’s working copy he established the colours he wished to be used and the engravings which were to remain in black and white. He also gives a clue to the identity of the individual who, in the end, was possibly responsible for carrying out his instructions, a Mrs Clark; the name is written in Edward’s hand across the top of the last illustration. His instructions, however, were not strictly adhered to, and the final colourings are in every way inferior to what he intended’ (Barbara Wadsworth, Edward Wadsworth: A Painter’s Life, p.144).

Folio (301 x 200mm). Numerous hand-coloured engraved plates, some full-page, others cut down and mounted, these and various blanks annotated with instructions in the artist’s hand (some light spots). Contemporary plain russet cloth (lower board paint-splattered, edges a touch rubbed). Provenance: Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949) – by descent to the present owners.
