WOOD, Robert (1717-1771)

Les Ruines de Palmyre, autrement dite Tedmor, au desert. London: 1753.

Fine copy of the first edition. Wood, accompanied by James Dawkins, John Bouverie and the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Borra, travelled extensively in the Levant, reaching the relatively unvisited sites of Palmyra and Balbec in 1751. The Ruins of Palmyra appeared first; the labour and the cost of publishing delayed publication of The Ruins of Balbec until 1757. Walpole praised Wood's work, and the plates of these unfamiliar sites, mainly by Fourdrinier and Major after Giovanni Battista Borra, became an important architectural source. Berlin Kat. 1884; Blackmer 1834; Fowler 443; Harris 939; RIBA 3707.

Large folio (540 x 372mm). Text in French. 3 full-page engraved illustrations of inscriptions, 59 engraved plates and plans (occasional very light insignificant scattered spotting to a couple of plates). Contemporary speckled calf, outer edges of covers ruled with triple gilt fillet, amrbled endpapers, red edges (head- and tail of spine and bottom of lower cover expertly repaired). Provenance: Dampierre (engraved armorial bookplate).
