[WREN, Sir Christopher (1632-1723)] – AUCTION CATALOGUE.

A Catalogue of the Genuine Houshold Furniture, China, and Books, of Christopher Wren, Esq. [London: Langford, 1749].

An unrecorded auction catalogue containing property from the estate of Sir Christopher Wren. The discovery of the present catalogue adds a previously-unknown third instalment to a series of sales following the death of Sir Christopher’s son, also named Christopher (1676-1747), who had inherited his father’s estate in 1723. It follows a catalogue for the auction of Sir Christopher’s library in October 1748 (known in a single copy at the Bodleian) and another containing his architectural drawings in April 1749 (known in 13 copies worldwide).

Conducted at Hampton Court in July 1749, the sale offered 239 lots including furniture and decorative pieces from the bedrooms and gardens, 58 books principally of literary interest, a book of architectural drawings, and four lots containing 16 original copper plates engraved with views/plans of St Paul’s Cathedral, St Mary-le-Bow Church, and other edifices built by Sir Christopher Wren.

Octavo (205 x 126mm). 12pp. letterpress text (first and final leaves lightly spotted and stained, title with tiny hole and small nick to blank corner). Printed self-wrappers, stitched as issued. Provenance: a few symbols added in pencil.
