NOTE
This lot is accompanied by a five-minute colour video directed by Chu Shu-hwa (1906–1988), which documents in full the creation of the painting by Zhang Daqian in Japan in 1956.

Chu Shu-hwa was widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the early cinematic history of Mainland China and Hong Kong. A native of Ningbo in Zhejiang province, Chu graduated from Great China University in Shanghai before relocating to Hong Kong during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Throughout his film career, Chu worked across nearly every facet of the industry—screenwriting, directing, studio management, and the distribution of international films in Hong Kong. He co-founded the Great China Film Company in 1945 and Yung Hwa Motion Picture Industries Limited in 1948, later continuing to work independently and in collaboration with other studios, including the Shaw Brothers.

Chu is best remembered for his acclaimed classic films Golden Phoenix (1956) and Nobody’s Child (1960). He retired in 1980 and subsequently moved to the United States.
