Adolf Herbst is a Swiss artist, the son of a carpenter, who studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the ETH Zurich. Then he worked in an architectural bureau for two years. In 1935 he turned to painting. In 1936 Herbst traveled to Paris and rented an art studio from Fritz Glarner. He attended the Accademia de la Grande Chaumière, a student of Othon Fries. He was friends with the artists Hans Reichel, Fritz Glarner and Alberto Giacometti. In 1937 and 1938 Herbst participated in exhibitions in Paris. In 1938, 1939 and 1942, Adolf Herbst was encouraged by federal scholarships to further study painting.
