Ahmad Muhammad Shibrain was a Sudanese painter and former Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Art at the University of Khartoum. Shibrain studied fine arts at the Khartoum Technical Institute and at the Central School of Art and Design in London. He is one of the leading representatives of the "Khartoum School", which combines Islamic, Nubian, African and Western aspects and traditions. Artists of the so-called "hurufiyya" movement (derived from the Arabic word for letter) developed contemporary forms of pictorial representation from traditional Arabic calligraphy. Shibrain's large-format calligraphs, in which the words of religious texts are interpreted as independent ornaments and images, attracted international attention.
