Conrad Gessner or Gessner (German: Conrad Gessner, also Conrad Gesner) was a Swiss scholar-encyclopaedist who was one of the first to attempt to systematise the accumulated knowledge of mankind about animals and plants. He is best known for his five-volume Historiae animalium ("History of animals", 1551-1587).
