Post 1942 Navy Version. In Bronze geprägter, auf der Spitze stehender fünfstrahliger Stern mit der Stechersignatur "Paquet F.". Die mittels Ringen befestigte Ankeragraffe ebenfalls aus Bronze. An originalem Halsband. Die Rückseite mit der Trägerdedikation "The President of the United States to 1st Lt. William D. Hawkins U.S.M.C. - Deceased - for Heroism above and beyond the Call of Duty against Enemy Japanese Forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands on November 20-21, 1943". In Etui mit blauem Samt- und Seidenfutter, der Holzboden im Inneren mit Stempelung "00196". Ähnlich den Etuis für posthume Verleihungen.
William D. Hawkins aus Fort Scott in Kansas meldete sich nach dem Angriff auf Pearl Harbor bei der Marine Corps Reserve und setzte Mitte 1942 nach seiner Ausbildung zum Scout Sniper als Private an Bord der USS Crescent City in den Pazifik über. Nach seiner Teilnahme an der Guadalcanal Campaign wurde er im November 1942 zum 2nd Lieutenant und am 1. Juni 1943 zum 1st Lieutenant befördert. Als Führer eines Scout Sniper Platoons wurde er beim Angriff auf Tarawa beim Sturm auf eine feindliche Stellung mit fünf Maschinengewehren schwer verletzt, verweigerte dennoch den Rückzug und zerstörte drei weitere Bunker, bevor er am 21. November 1943 tödlich verwundet wurde. Im September 1944 wurde ihm posthum die Medal of Honor verliehen und im Rahmen einer Zeremonie im Weißen Haus durch Präsident Roosevelt seiner Mutter übergeben.

Post 1942 Navy version. Bronze embossed five-rayed star with one point facing downwards, bearing the engraver's signature "Paquet F.". Anchor suspension device and the two suspension rings, top bar, and brooch also made of bronze. Original, slightly stained ribbon. The reverse featuring the dedication "The President of the United States to 1st Lt. William D. Hawkins U.S.M.C. - Deceased - for Heroism above and beyond the Call of Duty against Enemy Japanese Forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands on November 20-21, 1943". In a case similar to the cases for posthumous awards with blue silk and velvet lining, the wooden bottom stamped "00196".
William D. Hawkins from Fort Scott/Kansas enlisted right after the attack on Pearl Harbor in the Marine Corps Reserve and headed after the Scout Sniper School in July 1942 on board of USSS Crescent City as private to the Pacific area. After the Guadalcanal campaign in November 1942, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, and on 1 June 1943 to 1st Lieutenant. As leader of a Scout Sniper platoon in the assault on Tarawa he was severely wounded attacking an enemy position with five machine guns, refused to withdraw and destroyed three more pill boxes before he was mortally wounded on 21 November 1943. In September 1944, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor which was given to his mother in a White House ceremony by President Roosevelt.
