Post lot text SCHOOL OF REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN, VIEW OF THE CHURCH ON SEA AT MUIDERBERG, PEN AND BROWN INK, BRUSH, BROWN WASHThis impressively large view can be identified as one of the ‘Kerk aan Zee’ of Muiderberg, east of Amsterdam. It is depicted here after it was largely destroyed by a fire in 1630, and well before it was rebuilt again in 1686. The same church is seen from the west in a drawing at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, inv. R 134 (PK) (O. Benesch, The Drawings by Rembrandt, London, 1973, VI, no. 1302, fig. 1610, as by Rembrandt; J. Giltaij, The Drawings by Rembrandt and his School in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 1988, no. 189, as an imitator of Rembrandt); its ruined choir is depicted in another sheet, formerly in the De Stuers collection (Benesch, op. cit., IV, no. 823, fig. 1024, as by Rembrandt; A. Gnann, Rembrandt. Landschaftszeichnungen/ Landscape Drawings, Petersberg, 2021, pp. 61-62, fig. 52, as by Rembrandt). It is probable that the three views were made by the same pupil of Rembrandt on a trip in the countryside with the master. As suggested to us by Martin Royalton-Kisch, to whom we are grateful for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing, the same artist may also have been responsible for a fourth, double-sided landscape drawing in Stockholm, inv. NMH 54⁄1919 (Benesch, op. cit., VI, no. 1289, figs. 1593, 1594; B. Magnusson, Dutch drawings in Swedish public collections, Berlin, 2018, no. 334, ill., as by Rembrandt); as well as one in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, inv. R 87 (PK) (Benesch, op. cit., VI, no. 1342, fig. 1656, as by Rembrandt; Giltaij, op. cit., no. 191, ill., as attributed to an imitator of Rembrandt; like the drawing in Rotterdam mentioned above, it is made on reused paper with a printed announcement). A view of the ‘Kerk aan Zee’ of a different hand and given to the Rembrandt pupil Abraham Furnerius was formerly at the Schlossbibliothek in Aschaffenburg (W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, IV, New York 1981, no. 994, ill.). The sketch of a tree on the verso of the sheet appears to be by a seventeenth-century Dutch artist, but seems unrelated to the style of Rembrandt and his school. Sale room notice Provenance additionnelle : Comte Antoine-François Andréossy (1761-1828), Paris et Montauban ; Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 13-16 avril 1864, lot 399 (comme Rembrandt, ‘Étude pour le Paysage, dit : à la Tour carrée’).Additional provenance : Comte Antoine-François Andréossy (1761-1828), Paris and Montauban ; Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 13-16 April 1864, lot 399 (as Rembrandt, ‘Étude pour le Paysage, dit : à la Tour carrée’).
