Further details

FLEMISH SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, WORKSHOP OF PIETER COECKE VAN AELST THE ELDER, BALTHAZAR, OIL ON PANEL, ARCHED TOP, WING OF AN ALTARPIECE

The iconography of King Balthasar has evolved over the course of time in line with the concerns and developments of Western society. The Gospels give us no indication of the appearance of the Magi: it was only in the 12th century that the three kings began to be associated with the three continents known to Christianity at the time - Europe, Asia and Africa - in an attempt to make the biblical message universal. As in the present instance, King Balthasar took on the appearance of a king with sub-Saharan features, wearing a turban and rich clothes, an ambassador from faraway lands that fascinated the scholars and merchants of Europe's cultural and economic centres.

The tight framing of the present composition indicates that the panel was probably cut at the top to change from an arched to a curvilinear shape. Originally, our painting would have formed the left-hand section of a triptych devoted to the Adoration of the Magi, similar to the one in the Musée des Arts anciens du Namurois (Namur, no. inv. 162) given to Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550). Melchior, associated with the European continent, would have occupied the central panel along with the Holy Family. The right-hand panel would have been dedicated to Caspar, traditionally associated with Asia.
