(Please refer to section VAT refunds) Post lot text FLEMISH OR FRENCH SCHOOL, EARLY 18TH CENTURY, A OWL HUNT, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BLACK INK, BODYCOLOUR ON VELLUM This curious composition is drawn from an engraving by the Venetian artist Giacomo Franco (1550-1620) dated around 1590 and titled, The Devil’s Bait or the Lover’s Trap. An anonymous painted version from a private collection was exhibited in 2016, wherein the catalogue notice, Jean-Hubert counts a half-dozen identified copies (Carambolages, exh. cat., Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, 2016, n° 157). The depicted owl hunt consists of tying one foot of the bird to a platform, and pulling the other foot with a string to make the bird fly and turn into bait. Other curious little birds, believing it to be a prisoner, arrive to peck at the owl to set if free. However, the branches upon which they land are covered in glue, leaving them immobilized. The owl has been manipulated by a diabolical satyr, who attracts numerous suitors with its shimmering plumage. On the right, the spectator winks at the audience, who are not fooled by the dubious nature of the owl.
