Post Lot Text

“Tristan Bernard married Suzanne Bomsel, daughter of a textile magnate, in September 1888. He nicknamed her Lotte or Fermina. In a letter to Camille Bloche, he thus described: “A soul that is clear, purely and nobly selfish, the soul of an essential woman in the body of an instinctive woman […] Fermina is currently in an incomparable form of beauty… She has hair, a mouth, a complexion, an oval of the face that inspires lyricism in my soul.” At the turn of the century, they kept separate bedrooms while continuing to live under the same roof, on rue Édouard-Detaille: this enabled the writer to carry on his relationship with Marcelle Aron undisturbed. Annette Vaillant recalls receiving her, with her mother, Marthe Mellot, “in a kimono in the cramped bathroom, where this mistress with already slightly faded blonde hair was tidying a drawer of her washstand”.”
