Further details
Whether it be an anecdote or a legend, Bourdelle, as a child, was struck by his own resemblance to a portrait of the composer, discovered by chance in the window of a Montauban bookseller. From this first encounter was born a project conceived at the age of fifteen: "to draw up the Beethoven that I hear and admire with all my soul ». The figure of Beethoven accompanied Bourdelle throughout his career, from the early 1880s - his formative years - until his death in 1929. […] By identifying himself with the figure of Beethoven, Bourdelle assumed the condition of the suffering creator, the torments of genius confronted with the force of his destiny.
