Lot 114 | A Catalan Breviary-Missal
Estimate value
£ 1 000 – 1 500
A Catalan Breviary-Missal
Leaf of a Breviary-Missal, in Latin and some Catalan, decorated manuscript on vellum [Spain (Catalonia), 15th century].
A very rare type of text, with very rare use of Catalan.

c. 150 × 105mm. 18 lines, early modern folio(?) number ‘25’ in the upper right corner of the recto, the text comprising the end of a Mass for All Saints and the beginning of the Office for Compline, ending in Psalm 12:6 (‘Communio. Lux eterna luceat eis […] Ad completorium. […] exultabit cor meum’), one- and two-line initials alternately blue with red flourishing or vice versa (some cockling and darkening at the edges)

Provenance:
Colker MS 253; acquired in 1974 from Tomlinson, Baltimore.

Content:
It is not clear exactly what sort of text the parent volume contained, combining as it does a mass (usually found in a Missal) and part of the Divine Office (usually found in a Breviary), but a small number of so-called Breviary-Missals are known.

Following the postcommunion at the end of a Mass for All Saints, the scribe uses Catalan instead of Latin: the saints Alexis, Roche (‘Sant Roc’), Fausta, and Barbara are termed ‘Sant’ or ‘Santa’ and are followed by ‘Santa cros senher dieu garda nos. Amen. Apres tot ay(er)so dich que digas la passio del venres sanch’.
