MARK OF THOMAS HANNAM AND JOHN CROUCH, LONDON, 1766

Rectangular, on four bracket feet cast with stylised shells, the shaped rim chased and applied with shells and scrolling foliage, the centre engraved with a coat-of-arms within an elaborate chinoiserie cartouche of a hound pursuing a stag and a swan on a pond, with wood backing, marked underneath

26 1/4 in. (66.7 cm.) long

176 oz. 10 dwt. (4,989 gr.) weight, excluding wood back

The arms are those of Ogle with Soley quartering another in pretence, for Chaloner Ogle (1725-1814), of Southampton and his wife Catherine Soley, daughter of the Reverend Joseph Soley (1690-1737) prebendary of Winchester Cathedral, whom he married at St. George's Bloomsbury in 1764.
