Inlaid overall with with strapwork and scrolling foliage, the rectangular hinged top centred with a engraved cartouche depicting Mercury slaying Argus, the drop front and back decorated with hunting and village scenes, the sides with later brass carrying handles, opening to reveal a burgundy-leather-lined interior with a letter compartment and removable tray fitted with a toilette service, above five small drawers and two secret drawers, the silver with maker's mark of Thomas Dicks, London, 1830, the card compartment with printed label 'BIGGS / DESK & DRESSING CASE / Manufacturer / 87 Rathbone Place / Oxford Street London'; some losses and restorations
