The garments of the Mother of God opulently rendered with golden folds. The borders showing four selected saints: St. George, St. Macarius of Egypt, St. Jacob of Persk and Onouphrios of Neokastro. Finely executed with deep colours. The expressive faces delicately executed with soft earthly tones. Cyrillic inscription on the lower border partially lost. Losses, vertical crack restored, areas of restoration. 59 x 53 cm.
The icon of the Mother of God of the Sign is one of the most venerated icons of Russia. Its history is linked with the history of Novgorod. The importance of Novgorod has certainly contributed to the fame of the icon. Starting in the 12th century the icon was the source of several miracles, the first of which took place in Novgorod. In those days the icon was called 'Znamenie', which in old Russian means 'Apparition' or 'Sign'. Prince Andrew Bogolioubski who left Kiev and took possession of Vladimir, arrived with his army at the walls of Novgorod. The besieged had no other defense than calling on the Mother of God for protection. The here offered icon is a finely painted copy of the icon dated to the mid-12th century.
