GROSSFORMATIGE IKONE MIT DER GOTTESMUTTER DES ZEICHENS (ZNAMENIE) VON NOWGOROD Russland, um 1700 Holztafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Nimben vergoldet. 52 x 44,2 cm. Die halbfigurige Gottesmutter in Oranten-Haltung ist mit dem in einer Aureole vor ihrer Brust schwebenden Christus Emmanuel dargestellt. Über ihrem grünen Untergewand trägt sie das dunkelrote Maphorion mit Ausarbeitung der Gewandfalten schwarzen Konturen. Entlang des Randes reihen sich je zwei Heilige: Kosmas und Damian sowie die Eremiten Peter und Onuphrios der Große. Der ikonographische Typus der Gottesmutter als Orantin mit Christus Emmanuel auf der Brust entstand in Konstantinopel in der Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts. In diesem Bild verbinden sich Züge zweier wundertätiger Ikonen der Gottesmutter, die in der Blachernen-Kirche erschienen ist. Diese ikonographische Variante verbildlicht eines der wichtigsten christlichen Dogmen: die Menschwerdung des Erlösers. Die älteste erhalten gebliebene Darstellung des Typus ist die doppelseitige Ikone des 12. Jahrhunderts, die die Stadt Nowgorod - der Legende nach - gegen die Belagerung durch die Armee des Fürsten Bogolubskij gerettet hat. In Nowgorod erhielt die Ikone ihren Namen 'Gottesmutter des Zeichens'. Bei der hier vorliegenden Ikone handelt es sich um eine nahezu deteilgetreue Kopie der in Nowgorod verehrten Ikone 'Gottesmutter des Zeichens' des 12. Jahrhunderts.
