Lobed gourd shape, the elongated neck of square section, the lobes interspaced with panels of gilt oak-leaves and acorns on matted ground, the domed cover with baluster shaped foliate finial, the collar applied with suspension chain, the front of the body engraved with presentation inscription, marked on neck, inside of cover and chain

The inscription reads 'Midland Railway Compy, London & North Western Raily Great Northern Company Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Raily Compy ' and 'GUL · E · GLADSTONE / LITE / DE. SORTIENDO · INTER · SINGULAS · REDITU / QUEM · A · XV · CIVITATIBUS · PERCEPERINT / DIJUDICATA / D · D / QUARUM · ASCRIBUNTUR · NOMINA / SOCIETATES · VECTORIAE / MDCCCLVII' which translates as 'The railway companies whose names are inscribed presented this to William E. Gladstone in 1857 after the determination of the case concerning the distribution amongst them of the revenue which they were to receive from 15 towns'.
