Lot 5004 | A Lion-Head Damascus Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 Presentation Sword
A Lion-Head Damascus Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 Presentation Sword
Grosser pattern gilded brass hilt depicted with lots of hand-enhancement to the cat's jaw areas, brow, mane and backstrap. The remainder of the backstrap depicts an attractive floral design which extends into the ferrule. The "D" guard is very fine with oak leaves, depicted high off the surface, hand-enhanced with pebbling. The cross guard is also heavily decorated with designs, and the quillon ends with the head of a roaring lion. The reverse languet has a raised shield design which is left blank, with nice surrounding leafing. The obverse languet features the cypher of Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 applied. The grip is of fishskin over a carved wood base being in fine condition, and being tightly wrapped with triple wire, all being twisted. "Maiden hair" Damascus hand-forged steel blade remains in wonderful condition. The Damascus pattern is very prominent throughout the blade. The blade's obverse has a gold and blue, exhibiting wear, panel with raised presentation: "Isensee s./l. Hiemers,". A Second lieutenant Siemers served as a reserve officer in that regiment as of 1896, Isensee can’t be found in the Army. The blade's reverse has a gold and blue panel decorated with floral design exhibiting minor wear. The original brown felt blade buffer is in place. The top spine (opposite the cutting edge) the sword's provider in fine, raised letters: "M. Neumann Hoflieferant Berlin. Nickel plated steel scabbard with dual gilded suspension rings, exhibiting light patina.
Swords were prestige sidearms, privately purchased for ceremonial wear by German cavalry and senior officers in the late Imperial and early 20th-century period. The Damascus blade, gold embellishment, and cypher combine to make this an exceptional lot.
