A PAIR OF GEORGE II SILVER TANKARDS

MARK OF WILLIAM DARKER, LONDON, 1729

Each plain baluster shaped, on spreading foot, the body applied with a moulded rib, double scroll handle, scroll thumbpiece, and hinged domed cover, the body engraved with a widow's lozenge-of-arms, in brickwork cartouche and with inscription, marked underneath and on covers

7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm.) high

53 oz. 15 dwt. (1,672gr.)

The arms are the assumed arms of Fysh, probably for Katherine Fysh (b.c.1665-1730) of Ripon, co. York, whose memorial stone was recorded in the south transept of Ripon Catherdral in T. Wilson, A Verbatim Copy of all the Monuments, Gravestones, and other Sepulchral Memorials in Ripon Cathedral and its Burial Ground, Ripon, 1847, p. 14. She was the widow of Gregory Fysh (b.c.1651-1698), of Little Thorpe. In the same publication the graves of the children of Gregory Rhodes of Ripon are cited, op. cit., p. 25.



The inscriptions read 'The gift of Mrs Katherine Fysh to Eleanr Rhodes' and 'The gift of Mrs Katherine Fysh to Greg.y Rhodes'.
