MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY

The metal-bodied container is deeply carved through layers of red lacquer on the cover with Shoulao seated on a crane in flight above three immortals, their attendants, a deer and crane on a terrace. The sides are carved with floral sprays repeated on the sides of the box, which is carved with two egrets in a lotus pond.
