A REGENCY SILVER-GILT INKSTAND

MARK OF HENRY CORNMAN, LONDON, 1814

Formed as a Roman cistern on four acanthus leaf-capped scroll, anthemion and lion's paw feet, applied with two lion's masks and four drop-ring handles, fitted with three detachable silver-gilt mounted inkpots, the detachable covers with foliage borders and bud finials, the side engraved with Greek inscription, on a black slate stand, marked on body and pot mounts

71/2 in. (10.5 cm.) long; the stand 101/2 in. (27 cm.) long

29 oz. 16 dwt. (928 gr.) weighable silver

The inscription reads: 'ΤΟΥΤ’ ΕΠΑΝΕΡΧΟΜΕΝΩ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ ΟΙ ΦΙΛΟΜΟΥΣΟI ΓΑΝΔΕΙΩ ΦΙΛΙΑΣ ΜΝΗΜΑ ΤΈΧΝΗΣ ΤΕ ΧΑΡΙΝ' which translates as 'With this vessel returning to Greece, the lovers of the arts [dedicate] a monument to friendship and love of Art'.
