The horn widening at the mouth and carved with an idyllic scene of a scholar standing in a small cottage located in a rocky grotto surrounded by pine, palm and mulberry trees. Next to it a pair of lofty pine trees forming the handles. The reverse shows a fisherman on a riverbank and another scholar with two pupils in a flat boat. The scene is dominated by masterfully carved rocks, pine trees and the waves of the river. The interior rim is set with a pine tree ‘breaking through’ from the exterior, a design that somewhat became a ‘trademark’ of Zhou Wenshu.
Shape: Natural rhinoceros horn shape
Dimensions: 14 x 10 x 8 cm. Height of stand: 8 cm.
Condition: Good condition with minute fissures and pitting consistent with age. Minor loss to leaves at top and lower branch of mulberry tree. Old wax fill to lip (15mm) and to handle (12 mm). Pin hole at interior pine branch. The stand with minor breaks and losses.
