From the Miocene (circa 10 million years ago), Juntura Formation, Stinking Water Pass, buried under volcanic ash, the minerals in this tree were slowly replaced by quartz and silica over time, resulting in this beautiful opalized wood. The cut face polished revealing the annual growth rings of Quercus sp. This piece comes from a world-renowned now defunct site.
