A SMOOTH BANGLE OR A DECORATIVE ELEMENT
Jade
China
The Neolithic period, probably Liangzhu. 3300-2200 before
DM. 5.8 CM, HEIGHT 3.3 CM
玉鐲。中國,新石器時代晚期至商代,公元前1600 年以後。直徑5.8 厘米,高 3.3 厘米。維也納私人舊藏。

An amazingly smooth and precise piece of work, in the shape of a Bangle, is likely to have been due to the small diameter, but rather a more ornamental Jade. The concave curvature around is completely sanded symmetrically, the inner curvature extends exactly parallel to it. Both end faces are planar. The color of this Jade is a very nice light, slightly milky Green, a smaller field due to the iron content in red-brown. Good translucency, to the light, more yellow-green, the conservation – as well as the carefully-crafted Polish – are very good.

This Jade is published in the book of FILIPPO SALVIATI: THE MYSTERIOUS STONE: Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Han from private collections (release date spring 2017).

Notes by Prof. Salviati: This very fine cylindrical ornament is cut in a very simple though elegant shape from a good quality of green jade, with only a large brown spot on one edge. It has a flared, concave profile which is often seen on jade bracelets discovered in sites of the Liangzhu culture. However, the small diameter of the central perforation suggests that this jade was probably used as a type of hair ornament. A similar item (5.9x3.3 cm) in white jade with russet and brown areas is in the National Museum of History, Taiwan (acc. no.7068) and published in John Johnston and Chan Lai Pik, 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade Featuring Selections from the National Museum of History, Taiwan, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, San Antonio Museum of Art, 2011, no.14. Two more comparable examples measuring about 7 cm in width and 3.5 in height have been discovered in 1977 in the tomb no.4 of the Liangzhu culture cemetery at Zhang Ling, Wu county, Jiangsu province, they are reproduced in the Zhejiang institute of cultural relics and archaeology, Liangzhu wenhua yuqi 良渚文化玉器 (Jades of the Liangzhu Culture), Wenwu chubanshe, Beijing, 1990, pls.104 and 105.
