Lot 67 | A STONE METEORITE – TAMDAHKT
Estimate value
£ 2 000 – 3 000
A gorgeous fresh fragment with thick black fusion crust on the front face. The reverse face shows the interior structure, the stone having broken open on impact. This piece is a reminder of the huge forces at play in meteoritics.

Shortly before the winter solstice in 2008 an intense fireball lit up the sky above Morocco. In the Atlas mountains, a blast was heard, followed by an aftershock. Mike Farmer explained: “Due to the high relief in this mountain region, covered with snow at this time of the year, searching for the meteorite was a difficult task. The first reports on finding pieces of a meteorite came a couple of weeks later.”

Christie's would like to thank Dr. Alan E. Rubin at the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles for his assistance in preparing this catalogue.
