A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (KOIMESIS) Russian, Moscow, 16th century Tempera on wood panel with levkas and kovcheg. The details of the garments highlighted in gold. The lifeless body of the Mother of God on a bier, surrounded by the Apostles, St. Peter to the left swinging a censer, St. Paul touching her feet. In the foreground the narrative incident with the sacrilegious priest. Behind the bier Christ holding the soul of his Mother in the form of an infant. The scene framed by two tall buildings. There are six selected saints on the borders, St. Nicholas of Myra, a warrior saint and Sts. Boris and Gleb among them. The background stripped to gesso, minimally restored. On the reverse traces of a red seal and a stamp. 33.2 x 28.8 cm. Farbe des Hintergrundes abgenommen, min. restauriert Provenance: Gallery Ilas Neufert, Munich (autumn 1979), cat. 17.
SEHR FEINE IKONE MIT DEM ENTSCHLAFEN DER GOTTESMUTTER (KOIMESIS) Russland, Moskau, 16. Jahrhundert Einzeltafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, partielle Vergoldung. 33,2 x 28,8 cm. Verso Reste eines roten Lacksiegels sowie eines Stempels. Im Zentrum der Komposition ist die auf einem Bett ausgestreckte Gottesmutter. Vor dem Katafalk schlägt der Erzengel Michael dem Juden Jephonias die Hände ab. Hinter ihr steht Christus vor einer Strahlenmandorla mit der Seele der Gottesmutter in Form eines Wickelkindes in seinen Armen. Zu beiden Seiten flankieren die Apostel die Bahre. Feine Malerei in dominierender Rot-Grün-Farbigkeit. Entlang der Ränder reihen sich sechs Heilige, darunter der heilige Nikolaus von Myra, ein Kriegerheiliger sowie Boris und Gleb.
