A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE SAVIOUR WITH THE FEARSOME EYE WITH SILVER OKLAD Russian, Palekh, mid 19th century (icon), Russian, St. Petersburg, 1865 (oklad) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. Four selected saints on the borders: Guardian Angel and Sts. Silvester, Boniface and Catherine. Held in a cast and chased silver oklad with scrolling foliate borders, the halo similarly decorated. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'VVA' in Cyrillic. Minor vertical crack, minor areas of retouching. 31.2 x 26.5 cm.
