A VERY RARE REPRESENTATION OF THE ANDROGYNOUS SHIVA
Catalog number: VS0617-430
Dark Bronze
East Thailand to Cambodia
approx. 18. to 19. Century.
HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 45,2 CM, BASE 12 CM
The high-deity Shiva is half male, half female, and the distinction is only perceptible on the chest (and the attribute). This androgynous representation of Ardhanarishvara, this Union of Shiva and Parvati. Very well-executed, mild-manner, facial features, jewelry on head and ears. The Sambat-loincloth is decorated and bears the typical Khmer fish tail pleat. The attribute of Shiva, the goddess Parvati is only partly. received and is likely to have been a Lotusknopse or flower. Very good Patina. The collector's label on base back to the period of Ratanakosin (not "kokin"), was from 1767. Stylistically, this rare, sculptural very good-looking Bronze has clearly Khmer characteristics and is expected to be born in a area or in Cambodia.
