WESTERN WEI DYNASTY, DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO AD 537
The stele is inscribed beneath the triptych on one side and on two narrow sides with a long inscription which may be translated as “Respectfully made on the eleventh day of the fifth lunar month of the bingchen year, the third year of the Datong reign (AD 537), two images were made by the Buddhist disciple Zhao Youhuan for his deceased mother and father. He presumes to recall those departed spirits and souls who produced a son and led him personally, offering their compassionate faces the prayer that they ascend into the Three Voids with benefits sufficient for the Great Pool.”
