The arms are those of Smith, presumably for Thomas Smith, banker of Nottingham and Gaddesby, near Leicester (1631-1699), from whom derived a number of eminent familes. His second son Samuel was the ancestors of the Dorrien Smiths of Tresco. His third son Abel (d.1756), through his eldest son Sir George Smith 1st Bt. (d.1769), was the ancestor of the Bromley baronets. Abel was also, through his second son John, a London merchant, the ancestor of the Smiths of St. Pary Cray, the Smiths of Edwalton and Julian, 1st Baron Pauncefote (1828-1902). Abel's third son, also Abel (d.1788) was the ancestor of the Barons Carrington.
