Lot 65 | ABBOTT METEORITE
Estimate value
£ 2 000 – 3 000
Many small stones were found on a ranch with approximately 20 kilograms of material in total collected. Found in 1951 Abbott is an old meteorite, but the beautiful interior reveals show a high metal content and brecciation. This meteorite formed on the surface of its parent asteroid, acquiring high concentrations of noble gases from the solar wind. It also incorporated numerous fragments of CM carbonaceous chondrites, projectiles that hit the asteroid at low relative velocity. Abbott specimens are rarely on the market; most is curated in the collection of the University of New Mexico Institute of Meteoritics. Farmer managed to exchange a few pieces from the collection 20 years ago.
